Fishpond has turned green, tried green away by interpet, didn't work. any ideas how to get it clear again?
Question:Was lovely and clear water, added oxygenating plants and water was clear for about a week before turning, after a week I added the green away but it has made no difference, I know my fish are still alive, but wish the pond looked nicer, please help. thanks

The key to healthy, clear water is to achieve a balance between the various inhabitants. The plants absorb mineral salts and carbon dioxide from the water and, in the presance of sunlight,create food materials and oxygen. The fish absorb oxygen and release carbondioxide through their gills;apart from their aesthetic attraction they feed on such pests as water-lily beetles,aphids and caddis flyes. They also fertilize plants with their excreta.
So long as the plants- particularly the submerged oxygenators get plenty of light and have to compete for minerals, the microscopic algae that make the water murky will have little chance to thrive. On the other hand there must not be too much light in relation to the number of oxygenators. It is vital, therefore, to carefully work out the number and size of the pool's inhabitants. There cannot be too many underwater oxygenators, especially in the first year or two; after that any surplus can be removed. But floating and deep water aquatics must never cover more than half of the pool's surface, so as not to create too much shade.
The essence of a balanced pool is that it should be more or less self-supporting and self regulating.
A common problem is the growth of algae. You can easily remove the filamentous type blanket weed- by hand or with a stick, and flooding the over the pool gets rid of brown or green floating scum. But murky water indicates that there are too few under water oxygenating plants to compete for the available light and minerals, or that too little shade is cast by water lilies. Correct these causes of imbalance, and then if necesary use permanganate of potash to clear the water. Make a saturated solution by shaking the crystals in a jar of water until they all dissolve. Stir in a maximum of one teaspoon ful (5ml) of solution for every 50 litres (2cu ft) of water in the pool. The water should not turn more than a light shade of pink and should clear in a few days; if necessary, repeat later in the season.

That is algae, get a few algae eater and put them in there too. The water will not be 100% clear. If you have a rock base and sides, that will get algae on it too. I had a small plastic pond-my fish were house fish my hubby was throwing out, they lived all summer, fall and like all winter, I don't know how, it froze over.
Barley straw acts as a filter and gets rid of the green nasty algae.
thats your whole problem write there. the oxygenating plants, well not the plants them selves, but the soil you have used. it is rich in phostrogen which makes the freen stuff grow like crazy, you will have to clear out all the soil (or use straw to soak up all the phostrogen) and replace any soil with a Pond or aquarium grade soil.
any soil that blows into the pond will also make it turn green.
if you can afford it buy a filter with a UV light that's Incorporated inside this will deal with all that orid green stuff
failing that you can make a filter with an old plastic water tank sponge layers feed the water in thro the top and out thro the bottom into the pond,,i have the first one nice clear pond but before that i had the made up one that worked as well but not as good as the UV filter

sounds like some an excess of nitrites.
Don't use tap water; don't put in plants which contain ordinary compost only special water plant compost with no fertilizers; don't site the pond in constant full sun as sun helps algae to grow (although I realize it's a bit late for that now); Don't have deciduous trees close by as the leaves contain nitrates which will make the water fertile. Put in plenty of oxygenating plants and if you still have trouble with algae try a different chemical to remove it.
