Trouble with goat heads in my yard...got any ideas?
Question:I am having a aweful time getting rid of goatheads or sticker patches in my yard!I live in Eastern New Mexico close to Texas boarder.
I have tried weed and feed crystles and weed and feed spray to no avail:( if nothing else they just absorb the killer and get high!) what can I use to get them at least under control?
will burning them off when the fall gets here and everything gets brown work for the following year? Can I burn them while they are green? Also I have dandilions all over the place andy ideas there?
Answers:
I live in NM too. I've always pulled them out before they produced the burrs and dried out. You have to catch them when they first come up. Good luck!
burning is your best bet but in most counties you have to have certified Fire Fighter present when you do it.
I had to pull all of mine by hand before they headed out. Got almost 2 garbage cans full and there are probably still more out there. :-(
the only way we got rid of ours was to pull them out by hand or by using that fork tool to take it out by the roots. But be quick you have to get them out before the seeds (stickers) dry out or they will be back next year. same goes for the dandelions, if they bloom (the cotton ball effect) you have just caused more dandelions to seed all over the place.
I grew up in SW Oklahoma, and we had goatheads every where. The only way my Mom could get rid of them was soak the yard, squat down and pull them up by the roots. She pulled that Tom Sawyer trick on us kids and all 4 of us were out there pullin' stickers. That's the best way I know of. I live in Illinois now and if I say "gaotheads" they look at me like I'm from outer space. Oh, this was all back in the late 50's too.
