I have a friend who has moles in his yard, which I know they feed on grub worms. Is it too early to treat?

Question:Hello, I need some clarification from a yard expert. I have a friend who has moles and he wants to apply grub x or diazinon right now to his yard. I told him I would check with some experts and get back to him. I do know right now the application to spread on the yard is the weed and feed and I thought it was too early (I do not know the reason) to spread the grub x or diazinon. I always was of the assumption that the diazinon was spread in June or July. I told my friend that I believe May is too early but, I could be wrong. Please help and thanks for the great answers.

Answers:
Grubs may be feeding on your lawn's roots at this time for only a short period and then they move down into the soil to pupate into adults. It's very difficult to kill grubs at this stage in their development. The typical period of control (in northern Illinois) is in late July to mid August. Warmer climates could be sooner. Effective control is based upon the life cycle and effects weather has on the life cycle of specific grubs in your area. Check with your local extension service for their recommended time frame for control in your specific area. Here is a good article from U of I Extension Service, but the general principles apply to all areas.
