i have tried that trick and it works.. i have also done the opposite when i have watered too much.. put a dry sponge in the dirt to soak up a little water. i have dont the tupperware empty bowl underneath some of my smaller pots filler with a bug sponge that has water in it. that touches the holes in the bottom of the plant... so the water will get absorbed that way also. i do this when i am leaving for a few days! for my outside plants i get those clear liners that help protect your deck.. the 99 cent ones and i get them a few sizes bigger then my outside pots and fill those with water and the water gets absorbed by the holes in the bottom and catches rainwater as well good luck & happy gardening!
My grandmother had a neat trick that worked for small houseplants.
She used a "wick", a strip of cloth that came out of the bottom of the pot and went into a Tupperware type container that sat under the pot filled with water. The water went up the wick, through a hole in the Tupperware lid, and up into the soil where it was absorbed by the soil and plant.
I have never tried it, but it seemed to work for her...
My cousin uses cut up baby diapers in her outdoor potted plants. She always has the most amazing flowers and tomatoes.
