How often should a lawn be watered?

Question:

Answers:
It varies greatly, depending on the type of grass you have, along w/ the age, season, etc. I have St. Augustine and water it (well) once a week. I live in Texas so when the summer drought kicks in, I'll be doing it twice a week.

Is it new seed or an established lawn? New seed needs a daily dampening until the seeds sprout and are growing vigorously. An established lawn needs 1/2 to 1 inch per week. You can use a tuna can in the range of your sprinkler to measure how much you are watering.
A lawn should get about 1 1/2 inches of water per week. This is usually done with twice weekly watering. Using several tuna cans and timing how long it takes for them to fill up will indicate how long you need to water in that area.
