What are the symtoms of root rot, would it cause browning on leaves-no evid of aphids etc?

Question:i know there is solid rock about two foot under but i thought the
trees roots would spread out and not nec down, its really bugging me now. or could the soil ph be wrong. old man do you know. where can i buy a decent tree/flower book that would tell me absolute everything in laymans terms.

Answers:
Root rot is when the roots stay too wet and they start decomposing. 2 ft down isn't too bad, depending on the size of the plant.

Anything you plant needs to have the soil prepared first. There is an old addage - plant a 5cent plant in a 5 dollar hole. In order for the plant to survive it should have a place to put its roots that is rich in nutrients, hold enough water to sustain it. If your soil has to much clay in it, it will be hard, not crumble, and therefore not absorb water, and be too hard for the roots to grow in.

If you live on the west coast I highly recommend the Sunset Gardening book. Its about 1" thick and covers everything from planting, pruning, pest control, types of plants.

If you go to your local H/I center, they will have books there for purchase about the care of outdoor plants.

If you by chance live in the South or Southeast, Southern Living is by the same publisher

Good luck with your garden!

might need to transplant into a looser fresher soil. DO not over water this will cause a packed muddy soil and then the roots will not be able to stretch out and look for water. The leaves will go brown for too little water and too much water. You will have to start over so you can control that
is it a houseplant or a big tree.normally root rots are caused by a number of bacteria.excessive water, too much humidity, lack of ventilation etc. can cause dormant bacteria to develop faster.
reduce water.if possible cut off the affected roots and parts and apply a fungicide like zineb or thiram.if any bactricides are available use some.general sanitation is important.
to answer your question about root rot the syptoms would be the wilting of the leaves through a lack of water even in a wet spell as the roots are damaged.
two foot of soil above rock would not affect the plant atall.
drought conditions could also cause wilting of the leaves then followed by the leaves going brown.
the ph. could be wrong but would not cause the symptons you describe.do a ph. test most trees prefer the ph. just the acid side of nutral.
I think you live in america and I in the uk.so cannot sujest a book.
hope this has been of some help to you.
I think the first question should be What cultivar of tree are we talking about? Oak Sycamore Pine Ect, Normally roots of any plant will spread around any obstacle in there way, as has all ready been said any non aquatic plant with it's feet in water may develop root rot, Unfortunately I could not recommend any one stop books, wish I had one for myself, instead I have a collection of about 20 different gardening books hope this is of some help. Weeping willow quite often grow near water, so I would be suprised if root rot is your problem, Have just read my field guid to trees and the tristis weeping willow is the common species with poor growth in this country might be an idea to check just which willow you really have. best of luck
