My tomatoe plant is already about three feet tall, is this normal or just really good?

Question:I just put the seedlings in the ground Memorial day weekend. It's huge! I think I need a bigger tomatoe cage.

Answers:
It depends on what type of tomato you are growing. Some are a bit smaller, some larger, but three feet tall is about average. It will get bushier, and have more fruit if you cage it, and pinch it back.

FWIW -- My own patio tomato plant, which lives on my deck, is about two feet tall, two feet wide, with about twenty or more tomatoes on it. Granted, they are no more than three inches in diameter, but I had my first one last Sunday. I think that here in the Northeast, we are in for another year of bumper crop tomatoes.

That's normal. Depending on what kind of tomato it is, some grow taller than others. I have had tomatoes grow over five feet tall. It must be happy in that spot.
That will depend on where you live, but this seems to be a good growing year for gardens. We have had no rain, but I already have tomatoes, green beans, tons of squash and my cucumbers will be ready any time now. You may need to add a stake to your tomato plant since it is too big now to use a bigger cage. An old broom handle will work well, then you can tie it as needed with the leg off of an old pair of pantyhose.
Aren't you the lucky one? I planted most of mine May 5th and they are *maybe* a foot tall!!
It sounds like it is growing good. Don't try pulling the old cage off. I'd recommend wrapping some 2"x4" wire around it to make another cage around it. If you try pulling the old cage off or fitting another one over the top you'll end up breaking a lot of the branches.

Mine are about 2.5 feet tall right now. I put about 4 foot tall cages around mine.
