I am going sow grass seed on a new blacked space, how do I sow it and then keep the birds out of it?

Question:

Answers:
just rack a bit of top soil over it and keep the water going on it until the sun goes down that will help with the birds

I would recommend you covering with straw or hay that acts like a thin barrier so the grass seeds would not wash away esp with heavy rain. It's very common... I know straw or hay might NOT be readily available and in that case, I would recommend covering the bare grass seed with a peat moss and keeping the seeded area moist by watering in the mornings and evenings and it should help the seed germinate in less than a week.

Best of Luck!
if they are really bothering it, hammer a stake into the ground and attach an aluminum pie plate to it with twine, so it will bang around in the breeze and scare them off.
