How do I know how much to adjust my lawnmower so I can cut 1/3 of the grass blades?

Question:How do I figure this out? Take a grass blade and measure it and then how do I know what setting on my lawnmower to use?

Answers:
Julie is right on!! The reason we don't cut more than 1/3 the grass blade is by removing too much we weaken the plant. A grass plant is no different than a tree or shrub...how much do you prune at one time? You don't cut 90% of the foliage off.or at least I hope not.

You could actually measure both before cutting and afterward but your neighbors will think you are anal. Actually that is the most effective means and a good learning experience. Also examine the grass that's been cut. The pieces should be small, not most of the blade.

I like Julie's way, go to the top, cut and then lower a few days later and cut again. That means cutting more often than every 6 or 7 days....at various times in the season. Grass also has a dormant period where it doesn't grow as quickly so then you can add more time between mowings.

Longer grass means longer roots and healthier plants.

Why a third? , is that what some book told you? Just set the adjustment so it cuts some off then look at it if you don't think it is short enough lower it another notch or two till the grass looks the way you want it. You can't hurt it, as long as you are not on the lowest setting.Go for it!
We cut weekly with the blade setting at the highest level. I'd think starting there would be good. a few days later, you can cut again, lowering the blade if you want.

Leaving the grass blades long is better for the grass in that there's more plant left to photosynthesize and it also reduces the stress on the plant itself. Further. deeper grass help fight germination of broadleaf weeds...
