How do you build a firepit?
Question:I would like to have a tile edge or top (slate) but what do I build the bottom with?
Answers:
The bottom should be dirt, concrett or stone could shatter, blowing small pieces of burning embers around the area
Best bet is to leave it soil. Or pour a small concrete slab. Avoid using rocks/stones they can pop/explode when heated.

Just dig a hole. The soil will suffice, but if you want you could throw sand in there. Either will be fine.
Dig a hole, line the outside wals, and begin burning.
The bottom should be just dirt or steel.
