What type of soil should I use for azaleas?
Question:and can they be grown in pots - cheers!!
Answers:
They will thrive in acid/peat-based or ericaceous compost, watered with rainwater. Try to use wide based pots as they like to spread their roots outwards rather than downwards and they grow quite quickly, so you might find it necessary to re-pot into a bigger pot every two years at least, (with some varieties, it would be every year).
Azaleas, like rhododendrons, will grow happily in semi shade, dappled sunshine or in full sun - they do need sun for part of the day, but keep the compost moist - they soon wilt if allowed to dry out.
I tried growing azaleas in my sandy-soiled garden and dug in acid compost around them, but it didn't work, so had to resort to using pots and they are now beautiful.
if the pots are big enough, i'm sure your supposed to use acid soil for azaleas. Garden centres normally list what type of soils you need for different plants.
aracaious (sorry cant spell it) plenty of drainge holes water them with rain water NOT tap water there is to much acid in tap water if you do use tap water leave it in a watering can for a few days then you can water them with the water
Ericaceous compost which you can buy at any garden centre.
Azaleas and rhododendrons must have an acid soil. Most of them thrive best at a soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0.
Yes they can be grown in pots, but make sure they have good drainage or they will not receive the oxygen required for healthy growth and often develop root rot disease.
No tap water must be used...rain only.
