How to save our pumpkins?

Question:we're planting pumpkins for the second year... and are worried that they'll get eaten by these terrible black beetles again... is there anyway to stop them?... i've heard of putting the actual pumpkin on a crate to keep it off the ground.. is there anything else that i should know?

Answers:
You could try seven dust or spray.

The key to any insect control is prevention. Many people put down the black plastic before planting the seeds to keep the ground covered, and nymphs from getting to the plant. However thats not 100% effective.

Are these pumpkins for eating or for decoration? If for decoration I wouldn't hesitate to douse the plant(s) liberally with insecticide. Even if they are for eating, you don't normally cook or consume the outside skin. Just make sure you wash them very well before peeling, which will be a must in preparation.

Happy pumkin'in
