When they need it. Check the soil 1 inch below the surface. If you can still squeeze a sample into a ball that will hold its shape, no water required. Test this method against how the leaves are holding their shape. If the leaves are turgid, then the soil test is good. If the leaves are beginning to droop/wilt then revise your ball test to being more moist and irrigate. The next test should be with a soil ball being a bit more moist. If the leaves are turgid then you have established the range where you need to be ready to irrigate.
