How do I go about planting a peach-plum seed in my backyard?
Question:I have three seeds from some peach-plums that I ate and was told that I could let it dry out for about a week and then go in my backyard and plant them. I would really love to have these trees in my backyard full of fruit. So can someone please tell me step by step exactly what I need to do to have these juicy fruits. Thanks guys. :)
Answers:
1) dig hole as twice as deep as the pit is tall
2) put pit in hole
3) burry pit with dirt
4) add ample water
5) for five years: picture a beautiful peach tree with large juicy fruits in this spot daily
6) enjoy peaches
Chances are you won't get the same type of fruit that you liked so much. You're not exactly like your mom or dad, and you aren't the same as your siblings. Seeds are just as variable. If you want the same fruit, you need to go to a nursery and get that variety.
The good news is that you may end up with something much better! So, carefully crack the hard case on the pit so water get in. The rule of thumb is that a seed should be planted as deep as its largest dimension, so cover it with an inch of soil.
Yes, it is possible to grow from a seed/pit, however you will likely not get the same fruit as the fruit your pit came from. The most common form of propogation for fruit trees is grafting...where a small branch of the desired tree is grafted to rootstock, which would then result in the exact type of fruit as the tree it was trimmed from.
From a pit you could end up with any number of fruit types...perhaps only expressing the peach, or only expressing the plum gene. It is just a crap shoot...but that is not to say that the fruit would not be good.
