Tomato plant leaves turn yellow w/ spots?
Question:The last 2 years my tomato plant leaves/branches turned yellow with dark spots and fell off...this started at the bottom of the plantand worked up about half way. The plants still had lots of fruit but w/ no leaves at the bottom of the plant. What can I do to stop this.
Answers:
This happens naturally as leaves get older, but more often it is caused by lack of nutrients, specifically iron and nitrogen. tomatoes are very hungry plants and need to be fed at least bi-weekly during their flowering and fruiting. the best thing to use is a ready made tomato feed solution which you dilute with water and then use to water the plants. you can buy this at garden centres, nurseries and even supermarkets.
I love to grow tomatoes. It sounds like they need more water. Check to make sure the branches are not broken, near the bottom. Also, give them some good fertilizer. I used to use chicken manure, because it is high in nitrogen, and the plants , really like it. So basically, food and water, should keep them nice and green.
this sounds like a disease I've learnt about. Hmm what a long time ago it was. It's not from the lack of water though.
this could be Septoria lycopersici fungus cause that one is known to cause spots on the leaves and long oval spots on the stem and then the leaves fall of but it doesn't hurt the berries unlike the other fungii. the infection comes from the ground from old parts of the plant cause that's where the fungus survives till the next infection. You have to use fungicides or plant the tomatoes to another spot.
it is either the tomato plant has a disease or has essential mineral deficiency. For the plant disease, i think this is a case of tomato mosaic virus, there is no cure for this but you can prevent it by planting resistant varieties and do not smoke while planting tomato, for the nutrient deficiency buy complete fertilizer fro the garden shop.
