they are all rhodendrons botanically, rhododendron[named after Cecil Rhodes] is usually the evergreen one and azaleas r deciduous[drop leaves in late Autumn] with a good fall leaf colour and usually more perfume than rhododendron they like erecacious [acid soil]
azalia flowers in the spring a rhodedendrum flowers well into the summer and is a much larger bush and grows much larger with more blooms in my opinion a much nicer plant as it lasts a lot longer and will get larger each year

Rhododendron seems to be more hearty in Wisconsin. I've tried Azalea's twice and they never made it through the winter.
a rhodendron is large leafed and does not have a scent and an azalea has small leaves and is highly scented.
Rhododendrons are evergreens, i.e. they keep their leaves on in winter, and azaleas lose their leaves in winter.
Rhadendron lives in cool mountians coves without flowers and the Azalea has been continuouly modified to meet specific human visual needs til they find a replacment like the Rhodendron or Mtn Laurel..
