What is the best way to edge a raised vegetable garden?
Question:size approximately 3m x 2m
Answers:
I use railroad ties on my raised bed when I build them. They are sturdy, last for ever and take a beating from the weed eater. I also use large rocks I gather at the creek or river around my flower beds as edging. I look for colorful rocks and unusual shaped ones.
Depends on where you live, if you live in a termite risk area then concrete sleapers are the go, if not then wooden sleapers are a cheaper altrnative.
I always use gravel boards or scaffolding planks as a much cheaper alternative to railway sleepers... sink 2"x2"x2' staves squarely into the corners of your bed - leaving exposed the intended height of your raised bed.
Cut the required lengths of gravel board to make the long sides and affix with screws.
Cut the required lengths of gravel board to make the short sides and screw into place.
You can make the bed as high or low as you want by adding further lengths of gravel board, as long as you have left enough stave exposed and that you brace the 'planks' together with a strip of spare board or stave across the middle of the run.
I have even used this to build retaining barriers when doung landscape terracing and it has held firm (with much more solid posts set into concrete obviously!)
