Our house is built on a sandpit. We used grass seed designed for shady areas. It worked great. Just keep watering it.

You need a lot of organic material (compost, manure, etc) to give the grass nutrients and help to hold water. Grass will grow in sandy soil, but not very well and it will need a lot more water if there is no organic material. A layer of topsoil would be good, too, but that gets expensive.
