In deed, it sounds like a nest is being built in your hard. Save yourself the heart ache of running it over by staking off 2-3 feet around it. Yes, you will have a high patch in your hard, but it beats the alternative.
Baby bunnies open their eyes at about 10 days and leave the nest around 12-16 days. Plan your cuttings so during the time they will be leaving the nest, you are not cutting. It sometimes takes them a couple days to venture away for good.
Do not be concerned if you rarely see mom. In the wild, mom only comes back early in the morning and late at night to feed. She does not stay on the nest like a bird does. This is to protect her next from predators.
In my experience, it is a nest...yep, there could soon be baby bunnies there! Hubby and I learned this the hard horrible way running over nested babies on our property! We had no idea they were there when it happened, poor babies...
I wonder if she is digging a nest/den? The fact that she re-covered it makes me think she's considering using it as a place to have a litter.
defiantly going to be a nest.We were surprised too that this happened to us 2 yrs. ago. right out in the open yard. We left it alone but had to put up a little fence around it --we have dogs. the babies grew fast and left the nest within a couple weeks.
