How much topsoil can you put on existing grass, without killing the grass?
Question:I'm leveling off part of my property that has grass. I'm curious if adding 2-3 inches of topsoil on the grass will kill it, or will it grow through the topsoil.
Answers:
From what I've read, you can add about 2 inches. Make sure you don't cut the grass for about 2 weeks in advance. Baseball fields add composted manure to their fields every year then reseed it. (If you need to add more soil to a certain part of your yard, say 3-6 inches or more, just over-seed the area and it will look like new in a few weeks.)
This is a good way of keeping your lawn nice and thick. Add the 2 inches of top soil then reseed the area that you added the top soil. Rack it out so the grass seed is covered about 1/4 of an inch. Take a roller over the area to pack it down and water it really good. You'll want to keep the ground moist for the first 2 or 3 weeks so the grass seed can germinate.
You'll be amazed how beautiful you lawn will grow!
You must have at least 50% green showing. But over the summer you can build it up, add more when you can see soil. If you put to much the grass will rot under the soil.
