Will these asparagus roots grow?

Question:I bought a bunch of asparagus crowns that arrived around Febuary. Unfortunatly, the landscapers who were building a raised garden for me disappeared. Long story short, I just got done putting the crowns into the ground now. They have been sitting in the box since they arrived, but some of the roots were moldy, but the main crown looked okay on all of them. I know it's late in the season, but what are the chances they will grow?

Answers:
Don't give up yet. Plant all of them and see what comes up. If some of the roots are obviously decayed, cut that part off and plant the rest. It is amazing what can come back from a seemingly dead asparagus crown. From the heart of California asparagus country, good luck.

Give them at least a month before you give up on them, we had ours for about the same length of time and within that month all but 2 are growing just fine. They are very hardy and they can stay dormant for a long while. Remember not to cover the crown with soil, just below the crown and make sure the roots are spread out and covered well. Good luck!
