Why are Ash trees prone to branch die back?

Question:Mine die at the bottom of the canape and on the shade side.

Answers:
Consider pruning it, Ash will naturally shed bottom branches. Another new concern is the "Emerald Ash borer" sweeping the country like "Dutch Elm disease". Check with your County Agent to see if it is in your area.

Why they die back? I'm not absolutely sure, but I know that because the bottom branches do die back, Ash grows nice, straight, tall, and fast. When the bottom branches die back or are trimmed it makes the tree put its efforts into growing the leader (the top of the tree) straight up. Baseball bat companies like to use Ash because of the nice straight grains. I like Ash.
