Uknative was kind enough to sugest that wood ash would correct my acid soil. Is that ash from a wood fire?

lime will help your acid soil better and is less messy
Gardening centres and some builder's merchants sell bags of lime.scatter over soil, and hoe-in.
Most of the answers are correct lime is what you need, but don't use builders lime from builders merchants, get your lime garden centers, there are many different types of lime.
