My son in law did yard work including mowing, fertilizing, and landscaping. For mowing and weedeating he charged a dollar a minute.
That seems kind of high until you see how fast he can do a yard! He has a Bobcat zero turn mower and gas powered weedeater. Both can turn out a yard in record time and both are expensive pieces of equipment. So if you are having the boy use his own equipment, you have to consider its use and wear.
My son in law did a 3 acre yard in an hour. I don't consider that a bad deal. If the boy is having to push mow, you would do better setting a price for the completed job.

Somewhere in the $20 to $30 range is realistic for most lawns. Figure in the other factors, and negotiate with your lawncare people, and you should be able to come to an agreement that works for everyone.
