Growing onions for the first time?

Question:I was told that if I cut down the leaves on my growing onions they
would grow bigger and faster because all the nutrients would be going into the bulb and not the leaves. iIs this right or should I have simply bent the leaves over?

Answers:
If you want to have big onions that is not how to do it. (i wish i could show you some of the onions i just pulled up from my garden) When you go out to water them before you get the ground all wet, just take your finger and break up the tight dirt around the bulb. That will keep the onion expanding like its supposed to. As far as the leaves, you need to leave them on until right before you are going to eat them. When they are in your garden you can actually leave them in the ground until those green leaves turn brown. When you pull them up, it they are a little green keeping the leaves on will still help. The onions will suck the nutrients left in those leaves out even after you pull them up. Remember to store them somewhere dry. Good Luck!

ov what i can remember my dad only had one stem on the onion if that helps if your growing for show ask some one in the garden club
simply bend over the leaves when the greens are large. This will keep the bulb healthy and the nutrients will go to the bulb to make it larger
Thanks for the Q,as I need the answers as well
