The sand really only needs to be changed when you start getting sand brought back into the pool. Just make sure you rinse thoroughly after backwashing the filter to remove any sand from the system before putting it back on Filter.
There is a chemical product out there to clean the sand in the filter. The sand will generally last many years before it starts to wear down small enough to make it through the laterals inside and back to your pool.
sand should last a yr or more really depends or how much dirt it gets... you can run water thru it backward slowly and clean out the trash if you unhook it from the pool and run water thru hoses it will last a long time ive had mine yrs and have replace the liner twice and the sand maybe once or twice in ten yrs or more .. remember than it has water in it in the winter and dont let it freeze up and bust
You don't change the sand, a thorough backwashing whenever the back pressure gets to be 4 or 5 psi above the 'clean sand' pressure will be all you have to do. Sand filters are inexpensive to buy and to maintain, but a DE filter would give you cleaner water as it gets smaller particles than a sand filter does.
You don't change the sand unless you have a real problem with algae. Just backwash when the pressure is above the clean sand level. If this is done whenever needed your sand will last as long as the pool.
