Is it possible to grow Grass in Winter?
Question:I am building a house and need to have grass in the rear yard before moving in for the dogs and can not afford instant turf. I know I should grow it in anything but winter but I think I am going to have to try.
Answers:
No it doesn't because the grass goes dormant.
In cold climates, grass seed will cease to germinate sometime in December, and will not resume until the soil temps rise in late April. You can "dormant seed" this time of year, key word on dormant.
I know you say you can't afford instant turf (sod), but why would you bother? Your dogs will shred it.
Purchase and put down some cheap wood chips for the dogs,(not bark mulch) or better yet, call a local tree company and see if they'll deliver some to you free. They're always trying to get rid of it.
The chips will keep the mud out of the house, and the dogs happy. Good luck.
Yes,if u have a hydroponics setup.
If you lay seed in september (early) it should take root and be set for the winter. Once it is established mow it very low through the winter. When spring comes keep the grass at about 2", this will really establish the root system.
But, seriously I would not plant any later than Sept. My parents tried mid october last year, and it looks like a patch of poo.
