It's actually a sourwood tree but many have started calling it the Lily of the Valley tree because of the way it looks when blooming.
tree?
Yes. There is no such beast. Lily-of-the Valley is a perennial adapted to shade and a flower, not shrub, not tree.
There are many trees which have "flowers" similar to the LOTV, however, they are not the same plant or family. The plant you are looking for is a specimen and of great interest. It is a Sorrel. Beautiful and compact tree.
Go to your library and ask for Wyman's Garden Encly. Look up Lilly of the Valley and confirm this. As an aside, do not purchase a plant or tree from a website unless you know their reputation!! Find a Nursery, not a box-store, that deals with Full-Time Landscape Contractors for the plants that grow in your area.
Good Luck
It's more commonly called "Sourwood" It's Oxydendrum arboreum. It's in the family Ericaceae (Rhododendron, Blueberries, etc) With that in mind , you'll see that the flowers are very similar to Pieris ( Japanese Andromeda /Mountain Pieris/Himalaya Pieris) ) Gorgeous fall color .The spent flowers remain & still look good against the deep red leaves. If you can find it, get it! Not cheap, but definitely worth it!
Buy it in person from a local garden center. Anything you buy mail-order , will neccessarily be small. They are relatively slow-growing , so you will wait a long time to enjoy it. If you must go online/mail-order, try One Green World .http://www.onegreenworld.com/
I've bought fruit trees from there. They were good size, & good value ( Well-branched, 4'6",~1 1/4" caliper, cherry , for ~ $30, for ex)
ps jerry, "Lily-of-the-Valley Tree", while less common, is an accepted name for it . Dirr lists it as such in "THE MANUAL..". If it's in there, in landscaper' bible , that's good enough for me . ;D
