If you have Southern grass, it's not been warm enough at night yet to make it really grow. Also, we are having a drought here, and if you are too, it needs to be watered.

Southern grasses include Bermuda, Centipede, St Augustine, as well as some others.

Where do you live- what zone, and what type of grass are you trying to grow? Go to your local Master Gardeners at the County Ext Service and they can help you. Also good idea to get a soil test thru them.
what's the light situation? Make sure your grass is able to grow in low light situations.. I'd most likely thatch the yard... meaning get rid of the dead grass so that the lawn can breath... after that reseed... I'd let that go for a bit, then I'd put more fertilizer down, keep it watered... then go from there
First you have to identify what zone/state you live in. Second you need to chill out a bit - it is a lawn. Third, what Fertilizer did you apply? Last, did you do anything to promote the growth such as seed, minerals, etc.

Sorry to be so rough, however, many people use a Weed and Feed and find their turf gone. What they did not realize is the turf was weed to begin with and the product worked. We can make your turf Golf Course quality by Fall 2008 at minimum cost and minimum effort.

Grass does not grow on the soil, rather, the soil grows the grass. You can put Sod on top of Astro-Turf and it will last for a few days (see the World Cup Matches), however it will not grow. Sod, seed, grass in general needs a firm basis to grow. Too often we treat the visable than the cause.

In every state there is a State University that runs an Extension Service (generally in phone book or call Univ.). These people, as I was once was, will offer you invaluable help, for free, regarding your landscape issues. At a minimum cost they will show/do soil samples to specify what your property needs. If may take six months for the soil results, however, the agent can make specific recommendations on the spot.

In the meantime, and they don't take long to reply, rent an Core Aeration Machine. When the soil is pliable, not over wet or dry, run that machine for a half day at two and four inch levels. You will be pulling plugs from the lawn at both depths.
It will be a mess. Remove the plugs using a heavy tine rake.
Aside from removing the plugs it will also remove any thatch in your turf.

Get yourself a Cyclone or Drop Speader. I prefer the Cyclone, although, in smaller property the Drop is best. Search and find a Landscape Supply Store that serves Landscaper's versus a Box-Store (Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc.)
This is your source of information, quality product, and certified seeds. Buy the spreader wherever you find it cheap..
After the aeration apply your basic nutrient as advised. I would suggest an application(s) of Gypsum, Bone Meal, and a 10-10-10 with minerals granular fert. All are cheap and can be got at the Box Store on Sale. Topseed with a Certified mixture (Blue Tag). Whereas I have no ability to know your area you will have to depend on your Agent and Supplier. Whatever you do make sure it is a certified seed mix!!!
Aerate again in the mid fall. Fert every six weeks from the beginning to the mid-Dec. with the 10-10-10- and minerals granular at the minimum rate. Topseed again at a rate of 2lbs/1,000 sq ft in mid October. In the Fall leave the cores as they will contain nutrients and seed.
Sorry to be so long. There is a field of study in Turfgrass. See Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska Univs. Having the priv of going to Penn St. I sometimes find turfgrass questions silly. I apologize. I hope you will find the Extension Agent that can help you, or at the least, use my advise. I managed a Major University for over 20 yrs thanks to PS.
TOO MUCH FERTILIZER WATER EXTENSIVLY
I would recommend that you lime your yard,. Lime is sold in bags and you should by the "pelletized" kind it is much easy to apply, all yards with Grass need a good dose of lime every once and a while
