Rosebush care / maintenance...?
Question:I have several rosebushes in my yard. I just purchased the house, and am not sure the best way to take care of them. I want to know if it is better to leave them be all summer, or if I should go out and trim off the dying roses regularly...
Answers:
Yes, you need to trim them.
When you have a faded blossom, follow the stem downward. Trim it with a sharp set of shears just ABOVE the first branch with 5 leaves.
For best results, you should also use rose food to fertilize them. I use a type which also contains insecticide (systemic), and it goes through the stems to treat the entire plant.
When watering, don't soak the plant, but water at the ground. Too much water on the leaves can cause fungus.
Roses are delicate, but worth the work. I'm not an expert, but e-mail me if you have questions!
TRIM THE DEAD ONES OFF, IT IS CALLED DEAD HEADING, IT WILL MAKE THE ROSE BUSH PRODUCE BETTER, AND JUST PUT FERTILIZER AROUND IN THE DIRT AT THE BASE OF THE BUSH
I just leave mine alone water and some fertilizer and they are good roses are hard to kill. If you kill them you shouldnt own any plants lol .. this is kinda icky but my aunt won awards for her roses she would pick up her dog poop and put it in the soil really close to the bush 4 to 5 inches damn her roses where huge ... Good luck oh no no dont trim any plant while they are green do it going into winter and coming out of winter.. checkout www.about.com and do a search on roses that is a great site.
I just bought 3 rare rose bushes, my neighbor told me how to take care of them. If you trim them do it at an angle below the rose about 1 inch so. If you cut them a flat accross, they will die. Water them every morning or evening when the sun goes down or when it is cool. Also buy "Miracle Gro Rose plant food", it will make your roses bloom faster. You only have to put this on and around the rose bush once every 6 months. My rose bushes I planted from a bare root 2 weeks ago has rose's in bloom now, thanks to Miracle Gro.
Much depends on the kind of roses. If they are antique or Earthkind roses all they need is water. If they are of the fancier type you'll have to do more to care for them. For now, deadhead when a bloom dies or cut just above the first 5 leaf stem if you're going to bring flowers inside. Roses like to have water but don't like to have soil too wet around the roots. If you see leaf damage from insects use an insecticide if you see black spots or lots of yellowing of the leaves it could be fungus and you'll have to spray with a fungicide. Don't prune just before winter if you get freezes in winter. Pruning will encourage new growth that could be killed by cold temperatures. Here in TX we prune roses around Valentines Day to about 12-16 inches.
Good luck and enjoy your new friends.
