Can i prune my gardenia bushes?

Question:we moved into a house with huge old gardenia bushes everywhere. they are the biggest ones i have ever seen. they don't seem to be making many flowers and are pretty long and scraggly looking. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answers:
It's usually best to prune gardenias after they've finished flowering but in this case I would probably set about it straight away.

To stop them looking leggy, I would cut them back by at least 1/3 to maybe 1/2 of their stem length and then feed them with a slow release fertiliser.

This should encourage them to flower well next season.
