Good container-type plants for a small balcony?
Question:I realize it is a wee bit late in the growing season to start anything (I am around San Francisco), but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for decent container-garden vegetables, mainly because I want to make sure things are done as organic as possible. When I lived in New England I did grow pole beans, tomatoes, cukes, peppers, corn, etc., but I have no garden space here so am stuck with containers (I only have some herbs and strawberries at present). Any suggestions for what would grow decently in pots? I'm especially interested in growing tomatoes in a hanging basket, too.
Thanks!

You can definitely grow tomato and pepper plants in containers, as long as each plant's in a container that's at least three gallons. You'll need to stake them, or place a tomato cage around them, and you'll want to water daily (especially tomatoes: they have copious root systems!)
There's also a nice little cherry tomato called "Tumbling Tom" that is ideal for a hanging pot: it grows outwards and down rather than upright. Check a local nursery, rather than Home Depot or Walmart---this one's a specialty item.
As you already know, there's no point trying to plant anything vining in a container. But most herb plants will do fine, so long as the pot's big enough to accomodate them. Rosemary, basil, thyme, parsley and oregano are good choices, and you can bring them in if your winter gets cold.
Hi if you can hang a hanging basket or something like that there are tomatoe plants that grow in them. They aren't usually in stores. Check online for hanging basket tomatoe plants or check a nursey they should know what your looking for and it they don't have it im sure they may be able to tell you where you can and if you are still having issues i will look in my massive stack of catalogs and see if i can locate the ones i saw.
happy hunting and if you can let me know how the hunt went.
Although using a bucket isn't very appealing as a patio plant, I think this is a cool idea! Maybe you could use either a cherry tomato or patio tomato plant with a regular hanging basket?
