1 part sugar and 4 parts water. Plain and simple. I boil 1 cup of water with 1 cup of sugar then mix 1 cup of water and add the rest in ice cubes to make 3 cups then mix with the boiled mixture to cool it off and you immediately have your mixture ready to use.
Four parts water to one part sugar, however I usually mix mine a little stronger, and you don't need to add the red food coloring..
1 cup sugar to 4 cups water. Many say not to add food coloring but I always have and no problems have been caused. Only use a couple drops.
if you mix water and sugar for a hummingbird feeder you would have to change the water regularly, you see when the sugar goes bad the birds will die from sugar poisoning.plant flowers that they like its a lot safer.
You can always go to http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have a local pro servicing your area. They're national.
It is better to purchase the hummingbird feeder mix. It has added minerals & vitamins that plain sugar water doesn't have. I have found it relatively inexpensive at Wal-Mart but I'm sure other discount or pet stores carry it as well.
trying to give your hummingbirds diabetes?
Everyone saying 1 part sugar to 4 parts water without red food dye is right. A backyard birder is not going to recognize that their hummers are gettng tumors from the red dye as scientists are finding out. There is no need to buy mixes at a store. Hummers only use feeders to supplement their diet, not as a prime source. Hummers also eat lots of small flying insects. They will get all the nutrition they need in the wild, feeders are there to help them out in a pinch and for our enjoyment.

What a hummer likes most about a feeder is using it right at day break and right before nightfall. You will see more of them at these times. When a hummer wakes up, it is ravenous, and likes a known meal to be close at hand. In the evening, they have to stock up on food to make it through the night. They have the fastest metabolism in the animal kingdom, and there are even species in South America that can starve to death in the night. Crazy isn't it?
