How can I landscape my front yard when no grass will grow?

Question:No grass grows in my font yard, nothing only dirt. When it rains it's muddy and when it's windy dust finds it's way into my home. I have dust everywere in my home any suggestions?

I wouldn't go w/ a fish pond in the front yard... Sounds like a law suit waiting to happen. (kids are attracted to water)... unless you do one of those pond-less waterfalls maybe... just shut it off when you are at work.
Just landscape the whole thing nicely with small trees, and perennials.. add a lot of mulch to keep the dust down and sidewalks and maybe a little patio/courtyard type thing with a bench and planters on it to take up more of that non existent lawn. and have the rest of the yard be a garden. with bird baths and feeders...and stuff like that.it can be gorgeous without a traditional "lawn"...start drawing it out on paper first, and let your imagination run wild!

unless you want to re top soil your whole yard(very expensive)i would check out ground covering bushes and landscape shrubs that actually like the dirt..you can incorperate grasses and stone and maybe even put in some type of a water attraction in it like a small brook or a small fish pond..
Get some turf
Where do you live and what is the soil like - clay, sand, loam? Is the soil impacted (solid?) It might need to be dug over and have some soil conditioner added before you put in plants. The type of plants you choose will depend on the conditions: is the area in full sun or deep shade, or a mixture of both? I found lawn to be a waste of time, water and money, so dug it all out and planted Australian natives, with sawdust paths meandering through - far more interesting, always colourful, bird-attracting and environmentally friendly, too. Perth has horrendously hot summers but I still only have to water once or twice a week. I use wetting agents to help hold the water in the sandy soil, as well as home-made compost and mulch. It all works together to attract worms to the site and keep the soil healthy. I wish you all the best to get your front yard looking wonderful. It will take time, but it's worth the effort!
I had the same problem until two years ago...I got sick of it and decided I would do whatever it took to have grass. I had even put sod on my yard a few years earlier and it died. I tilled up my entire yard (yes its work) then I added some sand to the dirt you may not have to do that but it holds moisture. Then I seeded my entire lawn very very thick with Tall Fescue.only do this in early spring or late fall grass will not come up in the heat of summer. About a week or a lil more before you do this I would roundup my entire yard to help prevent weeds. Then if it is hard for you to keep it moist put straw or hay of the yard and only water it for about 20-3- mins every other day because if its too wet the seed will rot. But after it comes up you can water it a little more. Good luck..my yard has never looked so good I actually have the best looking yard on the block - or thats what my neighboors tell me. I think it looks better than sod!!
