How do I become certified to apply fertilizer?
Question:I have a landscaping company and want to start applying liquid fertilizer. I know you have to be certified by the state, but where do you go and what do you have to do?
Answers:
In the state of Illinois the Illinois Department of Agriculture (DOA) manages the licensing of applicators. The University of Illinois Extension Service assists the DOA in running state-wide education events and testing. The little bit of searching I did shows that many states manage this through their DOA as well. I would suggest that you start with your state's Department of Agriculture and/or the local university extension service.
In Illinois we do not need to be licensed to apply fertilizers, but we have a signage law that you must understand and follow. I know from my own experience that just fertilizing is of limited value to my customers. Most people want you to be able to apply pesticides as well. Pesticide applications do require a license, proof of state mandated minimum insurance coverage, a state inspected/approved mixing containment area, a paid license and passing a general standard and at least one category specific tests every three years.

Go to , or call your local Cornell Cooperative extension office . There is a class and test you have to take and pass. I think it may be part of the pesticides applicators license.Anyway the Cooperative Ext. will know. Every County has one... Good Luck to you and your Business.
