sounds like a "blue potato bush" . it's tropical and has hundreds of purple blooms all over it!
I'll take a guess. Is it a Jacaranda? We have similar climate to California, and a lot of similar trees grow well in New Zealand. Jacaranda is a deciduous tree with heaps of purple flowers.They drop all over the place. Very pretty!
