I bought 2 beautiful and healthy Astilbe'Ostrich Plume' last week and now it looks like they're dying! Help!
Question:They looked beautiful and perfectly healthy last week; I plant them on the ground where there is sun all morning and then shade from around 1 PM trough the rest of the day. On the tag it says to water thoroughly and continue to water regulary until the plant is established so, because of the heat lately ( I live in Indiana-zone 5) I did it every day.and 2 days ago I noticed the leaves turned yellow and brown on the edges and the whole plant look bad... too much watering ?? or.
Answers:
Astilbe are the mainstay of the SHADY perennial border. They are effective at the edge of pools, along shady paths. Need moist, not boggy soil. Rich soil with ample humus.
If where you planted these plants does not meet the above, you need to dig them up and re-plant.
However, you should know that at the end of their blooming "season", Astilbe die down completely and seem to disappear. If you do not disturb the plants (assuming that they were planted as described in the first paragraph), they will come back next spring!!
In California, Astilbe have already gone dormant! (I am sure that Indiana is different!! Talk to your local nursery person).
Good Luck!!
When you live in a hot area watering should be done in early morning and late at night. No when the sun is shining and never get the leaves wet [ that will cause browning ]. Lay off the water for a day and then resume only in early morning and late evening[ after sun has gone down ]..
