To reduce algae in a pool should you keep the cover on or off?

Question:We were told to keep our cover ON our pool because if we didn't then the sun would deplete all the chemicals out of the pool, thus causing algae buildup. Another time we were told that we have to keep the cover OFF because when it is closed that is when the algae builds up due to the algae needs warm conditions to grow!

So, cover on or cover off??? We have a 20,000 gallon plus sized pool.

Answers:
Keep the cover on when not in use. They told you correct. The sun will deplete the chemicals and the chlorine and will promote algae growth..

off
I would say on, because the algae needs the sun to grow. So make sure you have a non-transparent cover!
The sun does deplete some chemicals but thats why there are water testing kits..to test the water and replace the chemicals. Keep the cover off during the summer, test a few times a week and shock it once a week.
