There is a new product on the market that allows you to grow them upside down. many people are using the tumbler tomatoes in hanging baskets, etc. As far as i am aware multi purpose compost is just fine. Main benefit is that the tomatoes are not battling gravity to grow upwards
tomato compost is better and u c an grow tomatoes in hanging baskets to if tht helps
Try planting them in Australia.
And if you can't get hold of inverted compost, multi-purpose should work.
You can but its a waste of time and effort, The same variety
grown normally will out yeild an upside down one
1.get a 5 gallon bucket
2.cut a small hole in the botton (enough so you can fit the tomatoe plant through)
3.put the plant through the hole
4.fill the bucket with potting soil
5.you must hang the bucket pretty high off the ground.just so the plant won't touch the ground
6. water and watch it grow
I know this works because my father in law planted several this year this way and we have already eaten some .i had my doubts about this tech. at first but it works.
Yes, you can grow them in a basket
I am doing mine in a 5 gallon bucket. Made one mistake though. The plant is so small that any breeze at all, and I mean any, makes it whip around. It is slightly damaged, but doing well.
I would start a fair sized plant. In order for the hole you cut in the bottom to be large enough t get the plant through, it will be necessary to use something to partially block the hole afterward. This could be a pail lid or other strong plastic. I keep a lid on the pail to reduce evaporation.
I thought this was a joke question at first but no!! Intrepid gardeners are really trying to defy gravity with their tomato plantingh. I have learned so much by reading this. In a greenhouse, the hanging basket, or higher staging idea would release space .
My first thought ws to put the seed in up side down, but after reading all the comments, I have to admit that I have learnt something new.
