Ripping out roses?

Question:I have several geriatric roses that I'm planning to retire. Can I remove them by hand (shovel, pick axe, etc), or do I need to get a truck and rip them out with a chain?

Thanks!

Answers:
Depends on how big they are and how far down the roots are.

You are going to need to first trim off the branches and get rid of the thorns so you can handle them!

We tore out a holly bush, and ended up digging the dirt away from the roots with a pointed shovel and pick axe and used a chain saw to cut the roots away from the stump.

Make sure you add plenty of fresh top soil or amended dirt before you place new plantings there.

Happy digging!

Take them out in style, the 4th is close and there are many ways to BLOW them out...
All of the rose bushes I've ever pulled out or moved, were relatively easy to dig out with a shovel--never had to use anything else. Some of mine had been in the ground for quite a long time too.
