How deep is to deep when trying to grow grass from seed.?
Question:Just wondering if anyone can tell me how deep I can bury grass seed before it will not grow... one inch, two inches.. not sure?
Answers:
Grass seed needs to be 'on top' of the dirt to germinate ... and I'm guessing that you think you'll be 'better off' burying it because the birds can't eat it ... but grass seed won't germinate if it's not 'on top' (even 1/4" deep is too deep for grass seed) ... but you can keep the birds away by 'covering the seed' with a 'net' that is open so the seeds can get sun and water, or you can put up stakes with rope and tie 'ribbons' on that will blow in the breeze and scare the birds away.
just remember that growing grass will land you in jail...
You don't want to "bury" the grass seed. You really want it almost on the surface with a good 1 -2 inches of soft, rich topsoil below it and a light dusting of something over the top (easily spreadable topsoil or a potting soil or even sterilized straw ). If it is too deep it will rot out and not always sprout.
Why bury it? Rake the dirt you wish to seed. Throw the seed down, lightly rake a very fine amount of dirt over the seed and keep the seeds moist at all times. We did this when the city ripped up part of our front lawn and we are the only ones on our block now with that new grass growing. So many forget to water constantly these seeds. Expect some seed to be carried away by birds so once your seed starts to grow you might have to throw down another round of seed
You don't have to bury grass for it to grow. Just rough the ground up a little and throw your seed out. Give it some water to settle it to the ground and watch it grow. It will take about 3 days for it to sprout. You won't be able to run a lawn mower over it for at least a good month. Just let it get good and rooted in. You can run a weedeater over it until you can mow it with a lawn mower.
Grass seed is broadcast on top of the soil and covered with a LIGHT layer of mulch, straw or compost. 1/4"?
Do you want to plant grass seed deeper so it won't grow? Whats the point?
You don't bury grass seed. Prepare your surface properly and then spread the grass seed out on top of the soil. Use a bamboo rake to scrape the surface once the seed is spread. Keep the soil moist even after the grass begins to grow. give the roots time to develop before you even think about doing the first cutting.
