funny you should ask
Yes and last year also.My god they look like wasps under a magnifying glass, they seem to fly slower than our wasps though.
yer, I thought it was a Sparrow in a tank top !!
Yes, but I heard it coming before it appeared on a branch next to me. It was comparatively massive compared to a common wasp, and sat there nonchalantly turning its head and looking my way! Perhaps it was trying to communicate in 'waspeeze'
Although having a keen interest in insect life, I took the initiative, and quickly scarpered!
Sounds like you actually have Giant Wood Wasps!-certainly if you have Scots pines anywhere nearby, which they favour. Scary to see and hear (sounds like a distant helicopter) but harmless.
Yes.
I saw a whopper early in the Spring here. I live in East Sussex by the way. I'm familiar with Hornets having seen a good few over the years, but this years sighting was a giant!
Hope that answers you question.
Yes there a few around, another example of global warming. There are also HAW flies around at the moment. They look like a hornet on steroids but do not sting. What looks like a sting is actually the females ovipositor which she uses to lay her eggs in trees.
Yes - horrid aren't they. I live in Gloucestershire by the way.
