Given a modest amount of land(<3 acres) is it feasible to produce enough food for a family of four?
Question:What types of foods?
Answers:
You have enough space (assuming that it is not covered with trees) to feed a family of four and sell the rest for a nice profit!
I do not know where you live, but unless it is the North Pole or the deep tropics, you can grow just about any fruit or vegetable! Right now, you can plant all the summer veggies like squash, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, eggplant, pumpkins, sunflowers, potatoes, onions, garlic, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe. Later in summer you can plant fall/spring plants like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, asparagus, artichokes, lettuce, Swiss chard, rhubarb. Next spring you can plant berry plants and dwarf fruit trees for eventual harvest.
In order to prolong the harvest and have something to eat in the winter when the harvest will be slim, you will need to learn how to "put food up". This can entail everything from holding veggies in a cold place (like your cellar), canning fruits and veggies, drying fruits and veggies, pickling fruits and veggies.
Go to your local library. You will find MANY books on growing vegetables and putting food up.
Good Luck!
Absolutely, as long as your land is sunny! Just be sure to stagger your planting times for every 2-3 weeks. That way during the warmer months, you get fresh produce every 2-3 weeks, then once the weather starts to get cooler you can still have crops for canning in preparation for the winter.
You would primarily grow veggies, if you have some sunny wet spots: watermelon, cantelope, etc. Use some of the space to grow some fruit trees, but be cautious not to plant them too close to your house.
yes. the land area is enough to produce food for 4 persons. But u need to manage what plants to grow. i suggest u growing tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, okra, peas, squash.
I have less than an acre and I grow enough food for my family of 4 (1 female, 3 large men). I grow and can or freeze green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, peppers (red and green), eggplant, celery, mesculan greens, spinach, beets and potatoes. I don't grow corn any more, too tempting for the racoons. I also have berry bushes (6 blueberry, 4 raspberry and 6 blackberry), a pear tree, a peach tree and two apple trees. So take it from some one who does, yes you can!
Yes, Be sure and learn how to can the vegtables and the will last you all winter long. Go for beans Cucumbers(nothing beats a homemade pickle.) Tomatoes, Beets, Spinach, Any thing that can be cooked can be canned.
