What really works to kill weeds in your garden.. so I will never have to deweed ever again?

Question:I only have Iris's... What can I sprinkle/spray/pour to kill these weeds without destroying plants?

Answers:
There have been a lot of bad answers given to this question and one good answer. First what not to do. Black plastic weed barrier- bad because it suffocates the plants any good landscaper can tell you this. Don't put mulch onto any type of weed barrier because the mulch will wash off the fabric more so than just putting the mulch on the dirt. Weed barrier is a waste if using wood mulch because the mulch will decompose and weeds will grow in the mulch anyway. Don't leave your plants in pots because they will not live very long. Don't add a lot of salt to your soil because it will mess up the chemical balance of the soil. The best thing to do is weed the bed and apply preen. Mulch is a good idea and will help stop weeds on its own. If it was my garden I would weed it, spread preen, mulch it, and add preen right away every spring to stop weeds coming up in the future. Hope this helps.

nothing.
nothing
a three inch layer of cement, or something of the like.

Other than that... nothing
Nothing? These people know nothing! You can put down plastic and then mulch over the plastic. You can also put the plants inside burried pots and put salt in the areas not potted which will make it so that things cannot grow in the soil outside of the pots.
Keep in mind weeds are also plants( that nobody wants there) If you have fertile soil and water and sunlight a plant will grow. the best thing to do is to keep weeding and be happy you have a green thumb!
Try Preen! You first have to pull the weeds , apply Preen and you should see great results. I
okay, there is something you can do, and it will even look good. First, weed the hell out of the bed so that there isn't even a blade of grass in there that you dont want. Then get some black weed block fabric (walmart, home depot, lowes) and cut it to size and lay it out and around your plants, using small stones to keep it in place. Now lay down a fairly thick layer of wood chips/mulch or crushed rock over the weed block. I have done this to all my gardens (i have 6, the smallest being 18x4) and have not had to weed since i put it in three seasons ago. Good luck

okay, i didnt mean to put the plastic ON the plants !?!?!
put it AROUND them and give them about 2 1/2 inches of space all around the plant. I had no idea that people would not understand that
And it is not black plastic. I think i clearly said black weed block fabric. F A B R I C
Ha! :) Thanks for your question, it really made me smile. You don't want to poison your soil. Just enjoy your plants and pull the weeds. Try landscaping fabric in the areas that the plants aren't and cover it with something that appeals to you. If you have termites in your area becareful of mulch. :)
