For those of you with a green thumb...?
Question:I made my own hanging baskets about 2-3 weeks ago with very basic plant like inpatients and petunias and the plants are still green but most of the flowers died. Will more flowers bloom or are they done? I thought I was watering them accordingly but we did have a major heat wave for a couple of days last week and recently it's been a bit cooler.
Answers:
keep pulling off the dead heads gently all summer long because they want to go to seed and then reproduce.by dead heading you are fooling the plant that it hasnt yet produced seeds so it has to keep flowering to do as nature intended.feed with a food suitable for baskets regularly and also water well everyday even if it rains.
they are repeat bloomer and should reflower. Try pinching them back to the next set of leave to encourage growth and bushyness.
They will rebloom, but be sure to pinch off the dead ends.
Just keep watering, as containerized plants dry out quickly in the heat. Give them some fertilizer as well; potted plants only get what you give them, so you have to replenish their nutrients regularly. My impatiens in baskets have been cranking out the flowers with regular (every 2-3 weeks) doses of miracle-gro.
Impatients are a shade plant and petunias are for sun. I think this could be a problem besides the hot weather.
Yes, they should rebloom... you need to "deadhead" your plants, take off all the dried flowers. If you let the dried flowers stay on, your plant will start making seeds from the flowers and you will have less bloom and for annual plants like those you have planted this signals the end of season for them. so you need to constantly deadhead them to sort of "trick" them into producing more flowers.
