Manure as Fertilizer?

Question:Hi,
I had a question about using cow manure as fertilizer. I have seen some slightly conflicting rules as to the use of manure. Specifically, does the manure need to be composted for the typical 2-3 months before being used?

Some sources have referred to using "fresh" manure. I thought there was a requirement for farms to have livestock separated from any food crop because of the worry about getting food contamination from the animals. Can you clarify?

Thanks

Answers:
If you want to prepare a bed well before planting fresh manure can be used.
Annually spread 1 lb/sq ft within the bedding area, mix in soil to 6" depth. Wait at least 14 days before planting. Best added in fall for spring vegetable gardens.
Fresh manure, especially horse, is great for piling around the outside of cold frames to heat the plants over night.

There's so much other $h#t out there, why use real $h#t? You should try www.1800TOPSOIL.com or call 1-800-TOPSOIL to see if they service your area. If they do, they can give you the "scoop." Manure is an EXTREMELY complicated fertilizer to use efficiently and healthily, and you can get better stuff for very little money. Give these guys a call and see what happens. Good luck!
you should never use "fresh" manure. The greatest issue is bacterial.. e coli, etc... particularly for edibles.

Further, fresh manure tends to be high in ammonia and ammonia at excessive levels can kills plants.. very quickly.

I'd suggest a longer composting time than 2-3 months as well.. more like 6.
Using raw cow manuer will burn your plants. If that is all you have, then you will need to compost it, so it breaks down, then use it on your plants.

I like rabbit manuer because it breaks down quickly and you can apply it directly to the plants without any negative effects.
