I have 5 acres of 1year old grass with lots of bare spots, am trying to let grass reseed itself.?

Question:The grass is tall in some areas with seeds and in other areas the grass isn't seeded yet. Wondering if the seeds have to fall off naturally or can you mow? Have spent plenty on grass seed and heard this would work. Any help appreciated.

Answers:
Leslie is correct, but enough "natural" seeds to fill in your lawn probably won't happen.

I always spread a light covering of straw over areas that I seed, it keeps the birds away from the seed, and keeps moisture in.
Works every time.

In order for your grass to reseed itself, the seeds have to be mature in order to germinate. Since it's so early in the season (depending on where you live, of course), the seeds may not have fully matured. Once the seeds are dry, you can mow your lawn and they should germinate.
