I say call home depot Let them do it! Saw someone before redoing a patio on a home improvement show, looked like a giant headache!
I have done my own patio and it is not as hard as you might think with a little planing. The key is to get it deep enought that you can put in sand and crushed stone for drainage and to prevent heaving. I would suggest checking out ths old house. com.
It's basically the same as laying a new patio, except you are taking up the bricks. If you have any tricky patterns such as circles or curves, you might want to document them with photos or sketches. You could even number the bricks on the bottom as you take them out. If your pattern is a simple one, just take them out and stack them somewhere out of the way. Usually once you get the first bricks out the rest come out fairly easily.
After you have the bricks out, it's just a matter of re-grading and re-compacting the base and then replacing the pavers.
