Has anyone salted the ground to keep weeds or grass from growing?
Question:I have a large area that I am mulching for a path/play area & I remembered that the Romans used to salt the earth to keep their enemies crops from growing. Has anyone tried this for a less sinister purpose?
Answers:
Yes! My mom does this for the weeds that grow in between slabs in her concrete driveway. She uses a spray bottle and fills it with a solution of 1/4 cup salt to half a gallon of water. She also adds white vinegar to dry the plant up quicker (we live near the coast, so alot of our plants are salt-tolerant).
And, yes, it is true that nothing will ever grow there again if you put enough salt in the soil. An easier solution might be to put black landscaping fabric under the mulch - I did it in my front yard.
yes and it works kinda sorta with repeated applications. Works well on the ocean front.
not sure about salt but there is a great product called "preen" you just sprinkle it on and weeds dont grow it is safe for kids and pets .It keeps seeds from germinating.Hope this helps .
I would not recommend using salt. Salt will permantly steralize the soil and nothing will be able to grow there again. Also when it rains the salt can wash into other areas of your yard-destroying that soil too.Try using a herbicide like round up. That will kill any vegitation that is there now. Then follow up about 2 weeks later with a pre-immergant such as snap shot. This creates fumes on the top of the soil and will keep vegitation from germinating.
Yes, I have used table salt in the spaces between the bricks in my patio. Worked very well, in fact. Killed the grass, weeds and moss in about 3 days.
I've used salt for ridding the lawn of dandelions,it has not hurt the surrounding grass and I bet it will work for your path and play area
