How do I use a planter without holes?

Question:I just bought some cool planters from Home Depot, but they don't have holes in the bottom. The instructions on my potting soil says to use planters with holes in the bottom. What should I do?

Answers:
Must have drainage--Drill the holes or take back.

Drill holes in them.
either drill hole in the bottom...look for a few circles in the bottom that you could pop out...sometimes the holes are there and you have to pop out the center
or
line the bottom of the pot with small rocks or packing peanuts then fill with potting soil
Planters must have holes for drainage, or you will get that lovely "sewage" smell and texture in the bottom of the planter. Then your plants will die.

You don't mention what your planter is made of. Most poly, fiberglass, or plastic planters have prepunched areas that you can push out with a screwdriver; look for circles at the bottom of your planter. If there are no circles, you may have to drill holes yourself; if you don't have a drill, you can use a hammer and nail to create several small holes. Be sure to put drainage material (I use styrofoam packing peanuts) in the bottom of the planter.

If you purchased a concrete planter and don't have the proper drillbit, you may want to keep your plants in pots and set the pots into the planter. This way you can lift the pots out when you want to water your plants.
